BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Physicist, born Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Educated U. Leiden (Ehrenfest), M.A. 1916. Niels Bohr's first scientific assistant. U. Copenhagen, 1919-26. U. Utrecht, 1926-34. U. Leiden, 1934-52. Research and numerous publ. on quantum physics incl. intensity of atomic spectra, normalising problems of charging and of mass; work on dispersion of light, among K.'s most importent contributions (1924); predicted, in paper with Heisenberg the same year, Raman effect. Died Oegstgeest, Holland 1952
